If your pet evolves to playful is there any way to get them back in line to dire?

I'm pretty sure that once it starts down an evolution line there's no way to change it. If you want dire, I think you need to get a new pet unfortunately

Beatrix is right... You can't change it back

Getting a Dire pet isn't that much of a drag (I thought it would be). I've evolved 3 pets to Dire on my ranger (Wolf, Rat, Heyna), And helped 2 friends evolve their pets as well.

Option 1: Here's what I do
[skill]enraged lunge[/skill][skill]call of protection[/skill][skill]call of haste[/skill][skill]predatory bond[/skill][skill]charm animal[/skill][skill]comfort animal[/skill] and the other slots are optional. From Gates of Kryta just head out and got your pet to kill those Mergoyle Wavebreakers. Your pet lvls up pretty quick. Once you get it to around lvl12-13 it gets a little boring.

Option 2: Lvl your pet as much as you can outside Gates of Kryta, and get a friend to play monk and bond you and your pet while killing Trolls outside Droks.

I have to add that I did all this before the introduction of Hard Mode,. So...there might be a lot of other possible places to do this. This worked for me

Easiest way is to death level your pet before you charm it. If you have heroes, bring them with resurrect. Set them so that they don't attack. And cancel all of their skills except for the resurrect. Take off all of your armor and hit the future pet once and let it kill you over and over until it levels to level 20. Make sure that you clear the area of enemies first. Flag your heroes around you so that they will return to their spots when chased. The pet will attack the one with the lowest armor most of the time, which will be you. It will take about an hour to 90 minutes to level them up. When you are ready to charm the pet throw your armor back on and start charming. When the pet is charmed it will show that it is dire. You can do this while being afk. Make sure to bring 2 or 3 heroes, because they will get killed once in awhile too.
